Serving Health Care Professionals Since 1983

We occasionally think back to the early days of the company, and wonder how that old computer equipment did the job.  5.5" floppy disks, DOS, the original IBM PC - stone tablets compared to what we have today.  But work it did, and some of those early clients remain customers today.

Platt Barber and Darryl Savage started HCDS, along with considerable help from their wives Pam and Rhonda, as most small companies do - working from their homes.  Computers for physician practices were in their infancy, but the founding principals remain the same as today.  HCDS has always focused on information technology for small healthcare practices.

The fledgling company eventually began offering Medicalis and Dentalis practice management software, developed by Articulate Publications.  Articulate was later purchased by CyCare, a very successful software developer and provider of electronic claims clearinghouse services, and a long run of MS DOS and Novell networking computer installations ensued.  HCDS moved to offices in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, where it stayed for nearly 20 years.

In the mid 90's CyCare purchased a Windows based program, originally called SpectraMed.  The early Windows based programs were often slow and 'buggy', but the operating system and software stabilized, and gradually clients migrated to the new computing standards.  Physician Office Manager, POM as it came to be known, became one of the earliest, and best, health care business applications available.  HCDS grew to 20 employees by 1996.

By the mid 90's most small practices had already automated, and many doctors became employees of hospitals or large groups.  This consolidation carried over into software developers as well, and many regional providers of health care software were acquired.  CyCare was one of them, and they became part of HBO and Co., a dominant provider of information technology to hospitals.

HealthCare Data Systems was one of the most successful resellers for CyCare and HBOC during this period, with systems installed throughout the Midwest.  The transition from Medicalis to POM was completed during the late 90's in preparation for 2000.

In 1999 HBOC was acquired by McKesson - the healthcare giant - and HCDS has remained one of the top resellers of the renamed "Practice Point Manager" (PPM) and the new electronic medical record software "Practice Point Chart" (PPC).

2003 saw HCDS expand to provide a broader spectrum of practice services by adding a health care billing service.  HealthCare Data Services now provides comprehensive receivables management for nearly 20 practices in a wide variety of specialties.

The company has grown to 35 employees, supports 300+ installations of PPM and PPC, and plays a leadership role in McKesson's reseller network - consistently #1 or #2 in sales nationwide.
